Motorcycle Routes & Touring

Legendary twisty roads and breathtaking mountain views on two wheels

North Georgia has quietly become one of the Southeast's premier motorcycle touring destinations, and for riders who know, the roads radiating from Helen rival anything on the more famous Tail of the Dragon across the border in Tennessee and North Carolina. The difference is that North Georgia's routes are less crowded, equally technical, and arguably more scenic - threading through ancient forests, along rushing mountain streams, and over ridgelines that offer 360-degree panoramas of the Blue Ridge.

Helen makes the perfect base camp for motorcycle touring. The town sits at the intersection of several legendary roads, offers plenty of fuel stations, motorcycle-friendly restaurants, and lodging options ranging from cabins to hotels. And after a day of carving mountain curves, there's nothing quite like sitting on the deck of a biergarten in the Alpine village with a cold German beer, swapping road stories with fellow riders.

Wolf Pen Gap Road (GA-180)

The crown jewel of North Georgia motorcycle routes

GA-180, known as Wolf Pen Gap Road, is widely considered the finest motorcycle road in Georgia. Running from its junction with US-19/129 near Vogel State Park westward to GA-60 near Suches, this 14-mile stretch of perfectly paved two-lane road features continuous sweeping curves, dramatic elevation changes, and virtually no straight sections. The road rises from the valley floor to Wolf Pen Gap at 3,290 feet, offering riders a constantly shifting landscape of mountain vistas and forest corridors.

From Helen, reach Wolf Pen Gap by heading north on GA-75 to US-19/129, then west. The entire loop - Helen to Wolf Pen Gap to Suches to Dahlonega and back - covers about 100 miles and takes 3-4 hours with stops. The road surface is excellent, but be alert for gravel in blind curves, especially in early spring. During fall foliage season, this route becomes one of the most spectacular rides in the entire Southeast.

Blood Mountain & US-19/129

The Appalachian Trail crossing with legendary switchbacks

The stretch of US-19/129 from Dahlonega through Neel Gap to Blairsville is a motorcyclist's dream. The road climbs from around 1,500 feet to over 3,100 feet at Neel Gap, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the highway and passes through the Mountain Crossings stone building. The switchbacks on the south side of Blood Mountain are tight and technical, while the descent into Blairsville on the north side offers flowing curves through open mountain meadows.

Stop at Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap for a break - the iconic stone building is a gathering spot for both hikers and riders. The views from the gap are outstanding, and the parking area offers a natural meeting point for riding groups.

The Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway

Helen's doorstep route to the ridgeline

The Russell Scenic Highway (GA-348) begins just minutes from downtown Helen and climbs 14.1 miles through the Chattahoochee National Forest to Hogpen Gap on the Appalachian Trail. The road features continuous curves and climbs from 1,600 feet to 3,480 feet, passing trailheads for Raven Cliff Falls and Dukes Creek Falls. From Hogpen Gap, you can connect to GA-180 and continue to Brasstown Bald, creating an epic mountain loop.

The Suches Loop

Three hours of uninterrupted mountain riding

The Suches Loop is a 60-mile circuit that's become a pilgrimage for Southeast motorcycle riders. Starting from Helen, head north to Blairsville via US-19/129 (over Blood Mountain), then west to Suches on GA-60, south through Wolf Pen Gap on GA-180, and back east to Helen. The tiny community of Suches - population roughly 600 - bills itself as the "Valley Above the Clouds" and has become a de facto motorcycle gathering point, with the Suches general store and TWO WHEELS gas station catering specifically to riders.

The loop takes 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace and can be ridden in either direction. Clockwise puts Blood Mountain's technical switchbacks on the ascent and Wolf Pen Gap's sweepers on the descent. Counterclockwise reverses the challenge. Either way, it's one of the finest motorcycle loops in the eastern United States.

Safety and Planning

Mountain roads demand respect and preparation

Mountain motorcycle riding in North Georgia requires extra attention to safety. Blind curves are common, and you may encounter gravel, fallen leaves (especially in autumn), wildlife crossings (deer and the occasional black bear), and slow-moving vehicles on grades. Cell service is unreliable on many mountain roads, particularly along GA-180 and remote sections of GA-60. Always ride within your skill level, carry basic tools, and let someone know your planned route.

Fuel planning is essential. Suches has limited fuel availability, and the stretch from Dahlonega to Blairsville has no gas stations for over 30 miles. Fill up in Helen, Dahlonega, or Blairsville before heading into the mountains. Weather can change rapidly at elevation - temperatures can be 15-20Β°F cooler at 4,000 feet than in the valleys, and afternoon thunderstorms are common May through September.
