Georgia Mountain Coaster

An alpine coaster winding through the mountain forest at speeds up to 28 mph - right on Main Street

The Georgia Mountain Coaster brings a burst of adrenaline to the heart of downtown Helen. Located right on Main Street, this alpine coaster carries riders on a thrilling descent down a wooded hillside, weaving through native forest on a track that stretches approximately 3,000 feet from top to bottom. Unlike a traditional roller coaster with a fixed speed and predetermined experience, alpine coasters put you in control - a hand brake on each cart lets riders choose their own pace, from a gentle cruise to a full-speed run that tops out at 28 miles per hour.

The coaster has become one of Helen's most popular family attractions since its opening, offering an experience that appeals to thrill-seekers and cautious riders alike. Children as young as three can ride with an adult, while older kids and adults can ride solo. The combination of speed, wooded mountain scenery, and the novelty of controlling your own pace through the hillside forest makes the Georgia Mountain Coaster a highlight of many visits to Helen - and the kind of activity that riders want to do again and again. Its Main Street location means you can step off the coaster and be browsing shops or grabbing a bratwurst within minutes.

The Ride Experience

A 3,000-foot descent through the mountain forest

The experience begins with a gentle uphill ride to the top of the course. An automatic lift system pulls your individual cart up the hillside, giving you time to take in the mountain scenery and anticipate the descent ahead. As you climb, the view opens up - the rooftops of Helen's Bavarian buildings appear below, the Chattahoochee River glints through the trees, and the surrounding Blue Ridge ridges stretch out to the horizon.

At the top, the track levels briefly before the descent begins. The first section builds speed gradually with gentle curves that let you get comfortable with the braking system. Then the track begins to wind more aggressively - sweeping S-curves, banked turns, and short straightaways where the speed builds. Trees blur past on both sides as the cart follows the contour of the hillside, dipping and rising with the natural terrain.

The beauty of the rider-controlled system is that every ride can be different. First-timers might keep the brake partially engaged, enjoying a moderate pace that allows them to take in the forest scenery. Return riders often release the brake entirely on the straightaways, letting gravity and the track geometry accelerate the cart to its full 28 mph potential. The curves feel faster than you expect, the wind rushes past, and the whole experience delivers an exhilarating combination of speed, nature, and control.

Night Rides

Track lighting transforms the experience after dark

One of the most popular features of the Georgia Mountain Coaster is its night riding option. After sunset, LED lights illuminate the track, transforming the descent into a completely different experience. The forest becomes a dark tunnel with the lit track as your only guide, and the lights of downtown Helen twinkle below. Speeds feel faster at night when visual reference points are reduced, and the overall sensation is more intense and exciting. Night rides are especially popular during the cooler months and around the holidays, when Helen's festive lighting adds to the magical atmosphere.

Visitor Tips

Get the most from your mountain coaster ride

Arrive During Off-Peak Hours

Lines can be long on summer weekends and holiday periods. Weekday mornings or late afternoons offer shorter waits. Night rides after 7 PM are often less crowded than afternoon sessions.

Secure Loose Items

Phones, sunglasses, hats, and anything in open pockets can fly off during the ride. Use a zippered pocket or leave valuables with someone on the ground.

Multi-Ride Deals

If you think you will want to ride more than once (most people do), ask about multi-ride packages at the ticket window. They offer better value than buying individual rides.

Weather Considerations

The coaster operates in light rain but may close during heavy storms or lightning. Wet track conditions may reduce the maximum safe speed. Call ahead in questionable weather.
