Why people pick the Helendorf
The Helendorf River Inn sits at 33 Munich Strasse with the Chattahoochee running right behind it. The inn's own site mentions the little rapids at the bottom of the steps that lead down to the water, and a balcony over that sound is the main reason to book here instead of a chain motel on the highway.
The other reason is the walk. The Festhalle, the restaurants and the shops are steps away, so you can leave the car in the lot and skip the downtown parking hunt. The river out back
Tubing on the Chattahoochee through Helen is a summer sport. Cool River Tubing runs daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, opens most September weekends and may open on warm October weekends, weather and staffing permitting. So in October the daily season is over; check their booking calendar and call ahead if you want to float.
Even without a tube, the river is the show. In summer you can watch the parade of tubers go by. In fall the hardwoods along the banks turn, and in winter the bare trees open up the ridgeline beyond.
Eating nearby
Downtown Helen's restaurants are a short walk from the front door. Hofer's Bakery is on North Main, and the restaurant guides sort out German, barbecue and casual options. Check the inn's current page or call about any on-site food service before you count on it.
Tips for booking
Pick your dates carefully
Oktoberfest runs nightly through Sunday, November 1, 2026, and the 2027 festival opens Thursday, September 9. Rooms near the Festhalle go first.
Midweek costs less
Sunday through Thursday stays are quieter, and it's easier to get the room you want. Rates change by date, so compare a few.
Bring the dog
