Unicoi Mountain Bike Loop
Forest singletrack and lakeside riding through one of north Georgia's best mountain bike destinations
The Unicoi Mountain Bike Loop offers one of the most enjoyable and accessible mountain biking experiences in the Helen area. This 7.5-mile singletrack loop winds through the forested hills and lakeside terrain of Unicoi State Park, delivering a satisfying ride that combines technical challenge with beautiful scenery. The trail is rated moderate to strenuous, with enough climbing and technical features to engage experienced riders while remaining achievable for fit intermediate cyclists willing to push themselves.
The loop takes riders through a variety of terrain and forest types, from dense hardwood canopy to open ridgelines with mountain views, and includes sections that run alongside Unicoi Lake where the water glimpses through the trees provide visual rewards between the physical demands of the trail. The singletrack is well-maintained by the park and local mountain biking community, with a mix of flowy sections, rooty technical passages, and punchy climbs that keep the ride interesting from start to finish.
Trail Description
What to expect on the loop
The loop begins near the Unicoi Lodge and camping area, where a well-marked trailhead directs mountain bikers onto the singletrack. The first mile of the trail climbs steadily from the lake level up into the surrounding hills, winding through a forest of oaks, hickories, and pines. This opening climb is the most sustained ascent on the loop and serves as a thorough warm-up for the riding ahead. The trail surface is packed earth and leaf litter with exposed roots and occasional rocks - typical Southern Appalachian singletrack conditions.
After gaining the ridgeline, the trail rewards the climb with a series of fast, flowing downhill sections that weave through the forest on swooping curves and gentle berms. This middle section of the loop is the most fun to ride, with a rhythm that allows you to build speed while still demanding attention to the trail ahead. Short technical sections with root gardens and rock steps break up the flow and require solid bike-handling skills.
The trail then passes through a lower section near the lake, where the terrain flattens and the riding becomes more relaxed. Views of Unicoi Lake appear through gaps in the vegetation, and on still days the reflections of the surrounding mountains in the lake create a beautiful backdrop for the ride. The lakeside section includes some boardwalk crossings over wet areas - ride these carefully, as they can be slippery.
The final miles of the loop include one more significant climb before a long, enjoyable descent back to the starting area. The last descent features some of the trail's best singletrack - smooth, banked turns through mature forest that feel almost effortless after the work of the climbs. The loop returns to the lodge area where the ride began, and the proximity to the park's facilities means you can cool off at the lake or grab a meal at the lodge restaurant immediately after finishing.
Trail Conditions & Maintenance
Responsible riding in a state park
The Unicoi Mountain Bike Loop is a shared-use trail, meaning hikers and bikers may be on the trail simultaneously. Yield to hikers at all times, announce your presence when approaching from behind, and slow down at blind corners. The mountain biking community and the park staff work together to maintain the trail, and riders are expected to follow leave-no-trace principles and avoid riding when the trail is excessively muddy to prevent erosion.
Trail conditions vary significantly with weather. After heavy rain, the clay-based soil in some sections becomes extremely slippery and prone to rutting. Wait at least 24 hours after a significant rainfall before riding to allow the trail to dry. The park may temporarily close mountain bike access after severe weather events. During the spring thaw and after winter freezes, the trail surface can be soft and easily damaged - check with the park office or local mountain biking groups for current conditions before your ride.
Skill Level & Preparation
What you need for a successful ride
Bike Requirements
A hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike is recommended. The trail's roots and rocks make a rigid bike uncomfortable. Ensure your tires have good tread for the varied surfaces.
Safety Gear
A helmet is mandatory. Gloves are recommended for grip and protection. Carry a basic repair kit with spare tube, tire levers, and a multi-tool.
Hydration & Fuel
Carry at least 2 water bottles or a hydration pack. Energy bars or gels are helpful for the climbs. The 7.5-mile loop is demanding enough to require fuel during the ride.
Skill Level
Intermediate to advanced. Beginners can attempt the loop but should expect to walk technical sections. Solid climbing fitness and confident descending skills are important.
Beyond the Bike Trail
Combining riding with other Unicoi activities
One of the great advantages of biking at Unicoi State Park is the variety of activities available when you finish riding. The park's lake offers swimming at the beach area in summer, and canoe and kayak rentals let you explore the water after exploring the trails. The lodge restaurant provides a full menu for post-ride refueling, and the Unicoi Lake Loop Trail offers a gentle 2.5-mile walking option for recovery. For those with energy to spare, Anna Ruby Falls is a short drive from the park.
Mountain bikers who enjoy the Unicoi loop and want more riding in the area should also look into the trail systems at nearby Woody Gap and Bull Mountain, both of which offer more extensive and challenging singletrack in the Chattahoochee National Forest. These trails are within a 30-to-45-minute drive from Helen and provide multi-hour riding options for those seeking greater distance and technical difficulty.
