Oktoberfest
The longest-running Oktoberfest in the South has been a Helen tradition since 1970. Spanning nearly three months, this authentic German celebration features live polka and oompah bands, traditional Bavarian dancing, imported German beer, hearty food, and a festive atmosphere that fills the Festhalle every Thursday through Sunday evening. Thousands of visitors don their lederhosen and dirndls each year to raise a stein and join the fun.
Christkindlmarkt
Helen transforms into a genuine German Christmas village during the holiday season. The traditional Christkindlmarkt features outdoor market stalls selling handcrafted ornaments, European imports, and seasonal treats. The Alpine streets glow with thousands of twinkling lights while carolers sing and the aroma of roasted chestnuts and warm Gluhwein fills the mountain air. A must-visit for holiday magic.
Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race & Festival
One of the most visually spectacular events in Georgia, the annual hot air balloon race launches dozens of colorful balloons from the fields near Helen for an epic journey to the Atlantic coast. The festival includes tethered balloon rides, live music, food vendors, arts and crafts, and the breathtaking sight of balloons rising above the Blue Ridge Mountains at dawn.
Fasching (Mardi Gras)
Helen celebrates the German tradition of Fasching - a pre-Lenten carnival with all the exuberance of Mardi Gras but with a distinctly Bavarian twist.
