Unicoi Zip Line Adventure

Unicoi Zip Line Adventure

19 zip lines and 9 suspension bridges - soar through the mountain canopy high above Unicoi Lake

The Unicoi Zip Line Adventure is one of the most exhilarating outdoor experiences available in the North Georgia mountains. Located within Unicoi State Park, this high-canopy tour features 19 individual zip lines and 9 suspension bridges that carry participants through the tree canopy high above the forest floor, with sweeping views of Unicoi Lake, Smith Creek, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountain ridges. The course is one of the largest and most comprehensive canopy tour operations in the state of Georgia, offering a 2- to 3-hour experience that combines physical adventure, natural beauty, and environmental education.

Unlike a simple zip line where you clip in, fly across, and you are done, the Unicoi Zip Line Adventure is a full canopy tour - a guided journey through the upper levels of the forest that includes multiple zip lines of varying lengths, suspension bridges that connect platforms between the trees, and opportunities to observe the forest ecosystem from a perspective that few people ever experience. The professional guides who lead each tour are not just safety technicians but knowledgeable naturalists who share information about the forest, the wildlife, and the ecology of the park throughout the experience.

The Course

19 zip lines and 9 bridges through the canopy

The course begins with a thorough safety briefing and equipment fitting at the Unicoi Adventures base area. Each participant is outfitted with a professional harness, helmet, and gloves, and guides demonstrate the braking system and proper body position before anyone leaves the ground. The instruction is clear and confidence-building - even first-timers and those with moderate heights anxiety typically feel comfortable by the time the first zip line arrives.

The first few zip lines are short and relatively low, designed to let participants build confidence and get comfortable with the equipment. As the course progresses, the lines get longer and higher. The longest runs cross the full width of the valley, with riders suspended above the tree canopy looking down at the forest floor 40 to 60 feet below. Between zip lines, suspension bridges connect the tree-mounted platforms - these wobbling, swaying crossings are an adventure in themselves, requiring balance and a bit of courage.

The highlights of the course are the lines that cross above Unicoi Lake. From these elevated vantage points, the lake spreads out below like a mountain mirror, the lodge appears small against the forested hillside, and the Blue Ridge ridgelines stack into the distance. It is a perspective of the park that is impossible to achieve any other way, and most riders describe the views as the most memorable part of the experience.

Safety & Professionalism

Guided by trained experts on certified equipment

Safety is the top priority of the Unicoi Zip Line operation. All equipment is inspected daily, and the course is subject to regular third-party safety audits. Guides are trained in aerial rescue, first aid, and all aspects of canopy tour safety. The guide-to-participant ratio is kept small, ensuring that each person receives individual attention throughout the tour. Dual cable systems provide redundant safety on every line, and the braking systems are designed to bring riders to a controlled stop even without active braking.

Participants must be at least 10 years old and weigh between 70 and 250 pounds. Closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals or flip-flops). The tour involves moderate walking between platforms on uneven terrain, so a basic level of mobility is necessary. Those with serious heart conditions, back or neck injuries, or extreme fear of heights should consult with the operator before booking. Weather-related closures occur during thunderstorms and high winds - the course operates in light rain but not during electrical storms.

Visitor Tips

Prepare for your canopy tour

Book in Advance

Tour slots fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during summer and fall. Book online or by phone at least a week ahead. Last-minute availability is rare during peak season.

Wear the Right Clothes

Dress in comfortable, athletic-style clothing that allows free movement. Avoid loose items that could catch. Long hair should be tied back. Closed-toe shoes with good traction are essential.

Camera Considerations

GoPro or strap-secured cameras are the best option. Phones can be risky - if you bring one, use a secure lanyard. Some tours offer professional photos for purchase after the experience.

Arrive Early

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time. You will need time for check-in, waiver signing, equipment fitting, and the safety briefing before the tour begins.

From a Visitor's Perspective

What we learned from our canopy tour

Having done the full 19-line course twice now, there are a few things I wish someone had told me beforehand. First, the suspension bridges are genuinely the most nerve-wracking part for many people - more so than the zip lines themselves. The swaying, the bounce, and the open-air gaps below make them a challenge even if heights do not normally bother you. Second, the views over Lake Unicoi from the mid-course lines are absolutely worth the price of admission alone. When the morning mist lifts off the lake and you are suspended 50 feet above it, the beauty is staggering. If you're looking for even more thrilling mountain adventures, check out our guide to waterfall rappelling in North Georgia.

My practical tip: the morning tours tend to be cooler and less crowded. The guides are well-rested and chatty, the light through the canopy is magical, and you have the rest of the day free to explore the park afterward. Also, wear long pants if the weather permits - the harness straps can chafe on bare skin over a 2-to-3-hour tour. The course is part of Unicoi's broader "adventure lodge" offerings, and it pairs perfectly with a night in the barrel cabins or a hike to Anna Ruby Falls.
