Christmas in Helen: The 2026 Holiday Season

The season starts with the Lighting of the Village on Friday, November 27, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM at Riverside Park. Local musical groups perform first, then Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive as the village is lighted, and kids can meet Santa from 5 to 7 PM. It's free; call 706-878-2181 with questions.

The organizer hasn't published how long the lights stay up. In past seasons they have stayed on into the new year, so you don't have to catch the ceremony to see them.

The 19th annual Helen's Christmas Market is run by the Helen Chamber of Commerce. It's a weekends-only market (two of them, with dates in the calendar above) and admission is free. Booths fill the downtown Marktplatz and Unicoi Hill Park with handmade Christmas gifts and decorations plus sweets and treats; for a real meal, walk to one of Helen's German restaurants. The market isn't at the Festhalle, and once the second weekend ends it's done for the year.

Planning ahead? The 20th market is set for the weekends of November 27-28 and December 4-5, 2027.

Hardman Farm State Historic Site, about five minutes from downtown, recreates Christmas 1877 with the Nichols family. Interpreters in period dress greet you in the mansion the family called West End, there are horse-drawn wagon rides, s'mores by the fire, Santa in the carriage house and sorghum ginger cookies from the historic kitchen. It runs on Friday and Saturday evenings in December, with pre-registration required (dates, times and prices are in the calendar above). More in our Victorian Christmas guide.

Helen's Christmas parade is Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 6 PM on Main Street, rain or shine, with fire trucks, horses, dirt buggies, floats, lots of candy and Santa. The area across from the downtown gazebo is a favorite viewing spot; get there by about 5:30 PM.

On December 31, the Festhalle (1074 Edelweiss Strasse) hosts the 13th Dropping of the Edelweiss from 8 PM to midnight: live music, dancing, party favors, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a champagne toast. Tickets are $30, $15 for ages 6-16 and free under 6, paid at the door.

Helen's Alpine look dates to 1968, when a group of local businessmen met over lunch and decided to remake their fading lumber town. Artist John Kollock of Clarkesville painted watercolors of a Bavarian village for them, Pete Hodkinson led the effort, and by 1972 the paintings had become streets, according to the New Georgia Encyclopedia.
