Lake Chatuge
Mountain-ringed reservoir on the Georgia-North Carolina border with stunning recreation
Lake Chatuge is a TVA reservoir straddling the Georgia-North Carolina border near Hiawassee, about 45 minutes from Helen. The dam was completed in 1942, and the resulting lake covers 7,050 acres with 128 miles of mostly wooded shoreline at an elevation of 1,928 feet. The mountains rise up around the water on all sides, and on a calm morning the reflections are something to see.
What to Do on the Lake
Boating, fishing, swimming, and more
The lake is good for just about any water activity. Several marinas rent pontoon boats, ski boats, and kayaks, and there are public boat ramps if you bring your own. Fishing is a major draw - Lake Chatuge is known for spotted and largemouth bass, walleye, and hybrid bass. The lake depth reaches 144 feet near the dam, which means the fishery stays productive year-round. You will need a Georgia fishing license for the Georgia side, and be aware that North Carolina regulations apply once you cross the state line on the water.
The Towns County Recreational Beach on Highway 76 is the main public swimming spot, with a white sand beach, a roped-off swim area, and a covered pavilion. A splash pad was added in 2025. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk. The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds sits right on the lakeshore and hosts festivals throughout the year, including the Georgia Mountain Fair in August, the Fall Festival in October, and the Rhododendron Festival in spring. Hamilton Gardens, on the fairgrounds property, has the largest collection of rhododendrons in the Southeast.
Two resorts serve the area: The Ridges Resort has marina access and an inflatable water park on the lake, while Brasstown Valley Resort in neighboring Young Harris offers horseback riding, golf, and a spa. For a day trip from Helen, you can easily combine a morning on the lake with a drive up to Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak, which overlooks the lake from the west.
