Unicoi Lake Loop Trail
A scenic lakeside stroll through one of Georgia's most beautiful state parks
The Unicoi Lake Loop Trail is one of the most accessible and enjoyable walks in the Helen area. Circling the scenic 53-acre Unicoi Lake within Unicoi State Park, this 2.5-mile loop offers a gentle, family-friendly path through a landscape that shows off the north Georgia mountains at their best. The trail is wide, well-maintained, and mostly flat, making it suitable for walkers of all ages and fitness levels - from seniors looking for a peaceful morning stroll to families with young children who want to explore the outdoors without a demanding hike.
What keeps this walk interesting is how the views change as you circle the lake. As you walk the loop, the lake reveals itself from different angles, reflecting the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks, the forested shoreline, and the sky overhead in constantly shifting patterns of light and color. On still mornings, the mirror-like surface of the lake creates perfect reflections that are among the most photographed scenes in all of northeast Georgia. The trail is a favorite with joggers, birdwatchers, photographers, and visitors who simply want a quiet, scenic walk to start or end their day.
Trail Description
Following the shoreline around the lake
The Unicoi Lake Loop can be started from several points around the lake, but the most popular starting spot is the beach area near the Unicoi Lodge. From here, the trail heads counterclockwise around the lake, following the shoreline closely for most of the route. The surface alternates between packed gravel, boardwalk sections over marshy areas, and packed earth under the forest canopy.
The first quarter of the loop passes along the dam and the eastern shore, where you walk through open areas with wide views across the lake toward the mountains. This section is the most exposed and offers the best panoramic perspectives. On clear mornings, the reflections here are extraordinary - the mountains, trees, and clouds create a perfect double image on the still water.
As you continue around the north shore, the trail enters a more forested environment. Tall hemlocks, pines, and hardwoods shade the path, and the understory of rhododendron and mountain laurel creates a green tunnel effect that is especially lush in summer. Small streams feed into the lake along this section, and you may spot great blue herons, kingfishers, or wood ducks along the marshy inlets.
The western and southern shores bring you closer to the park's camping areas and the lodge facilities. Boardwalk sections carry you over wet areas and provide elevated views across the lake. The trail reconnects with the beach area to complete the loop. Throughout the walk, benches and small clearings invite you to stop, sit, and absorb the peaceful lakeside atmosphere.
Morning Reflections
The lake at its most magical
Photographers and nature lovers who make the effort to arrive at Unicoi Lake in the early morning hours are rewarded with one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the region. Before the wind picks up - typically before 9 or 10 AM - the lake surface is often perfectly still, creating flawless mirror reflections of the surrounding mountains and forest. The early morning light adds warm golden tones to the scene, and mist often rises from the water, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
Fall mornings are particularly stunning, when the surrounding hardwoods are ablaze with red, orange, and gold foliage that doubles itself in the lake's reflection. Spring mornings bring the soft greens of new growth and the white blooms of dogwood trees along the shoreline. Even in winter, the bare trees and cool blue tones create compelling compositions for photography. The eastern shore of the lake provides the best vantage points for morning reflection photographs, with the mountains as a backdrop.
Wildlife Along the Lake
A habitat for birds, fish, and forest creatures
Unicoi Lake and its surrounding forest support a rich variety of wildlife that makes the loop trail a rewarding experience for nature observers. The lake is stocked with trout and bass by Georgia State Parks, and you can often see fish rising to the surface in the early morning and evening hours. Great blue herons are a common sight along the marshy edges of the lake, standing motionless as they wait to strike at passing fish. Belted kingfishers patrol the shoreline, and in spring and fall, migrating waterfowl - including wood ducks, mallards, and the occasional hooded merganser - rest on the lake's surface.
The surrounding forest is home to white-tailed deer, which are sometimes seen grazing in the clearings near the camping areas at dawn and dusk. Squirrels and chipmunks are ubiquitous along the trail, and patient observers may spot a red-tailed hawk circling above the lake or a barred owl roosting in the hemlocks along the north shore. The lake's marshy inlets are excellent habitat for frogs and turtles, and in spring the chorus of tree frogs can be almost deafening.
