Helen's Christmas season is built around a few big dates. The market is the main event, but you can easily stretch a trip over the lights, a Hardman Farm evening and the parade.

Timing the drive from Greenville
Assume about 2 hours of driving. The full route is I-85 South to Lavonia, then GA-17 into town. On market and lighting weekends the roads and lots around downtown fill, so build in a cushion and check the parking guide for free and pay lots.

Why Helen for Christmas?
Greenville has its own downtown Christmas, so the case for two hours of driving is the setting. Helen's Alpine-style buildings get their strings of lights all at once on lighting night, the market runs through the middle of town, and everything is close enough that grandparents and kids can walk it together.
One caveat is the weather. December averages a high of 51 and a low of 32 in Helen, with about 7 inches of precipitation over the month and well under an inch of snow on average, so plan for cold and damp rather than a snow globe. Indoor stops, including BabyLand General Hospital (free, open daily), help on wet days.

Unicoi Lodge and the park's cabins are about 10 minutes from downtown, with trails and Unicoi Lake outside the door. Plan on driving back to town in the evening.
Sautee-Nacoochee valley
A few minutes south of downtown, with farm-country views and easy stops at Hardman Farm and Habersham Winery. Quieter at night.
