October is the driest month (4.9 inches), and December is the wettest (7.0). Helen gets about 72 inches of precipitation a year and about 1.5 inches of snow, and summer humidity is real. The four seasons
March to May
Spring
Waterfalls run strongest after the winter rain, so Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls and Raven Cliff Falls are at their best, and wildflowers come up along the trails. Highs climb from 61°F in March to 77°F in May, and the last freezing nights come in April. Crowds are lighter than summer or fall, with a few busy weekends around the Trout Tournament, Springfest and Bavarianfest.
June to August
Summer
Highs sit in the mid-80s and afternoons are humid, with 5 to 10 days a month at 90°F or above. This is tubing season: Cool River Tubing charged $14 on weekdays and $16 on weekends in 2026, and the daily season starts again Memorial Day weekend. Mornings are the comfortable time to be on the river, and the Georgia Mountain Coaster and Unicoi Lake are open all summer.
September to November
Fall
Helen's busiest stretch. Oktoberfest fills the Festhalle every night through November 1 in 2026, and leaf color usually peaks on the high ridges in the second half of October and in the valley around the first of November. The Georgia Forestry Commission expects 2026 peak in northeast Georgia from the end of October to the first of November, give or take a week. October is the driest month of the year.
December to February
Winter
Cold, damp and quiet between events. Highs run 49 to 53°F, there are 16 to 20 freezing nights a month, and Helen averages only about 1.5 inches of snow a year, so don't count on it. In past seasons the village lights have stayed up into the new year, and December's Christmas Market, parade and Hardman Farm's Victorian Christmas evenings pull weekend crowds. Tubing is closed for the season; call ahead.

What to do in spring
Waterfalls
Anna Ruby Falls ($6 ages 16+), Dukes Creek Falls ($4 per vehicle) and Raven Cliff Falls ($5 per vehicle) carry the most water after winter rain.
Trout fishing
The Chamber stocks the Chattahoochee for the annual Trout Tournament. Anglers need a Georgia fishing license and, where required, a trout license; check Georgia DNR for current rules.
Wine
Yonah Mountain Vineyards (1717 Hwy 255 S, Cleveland, 706-878-5522) and Habersham Winery are the closest tasting rooms. Habersham is open Mon-Thu 10-6, Fri-Sat 10-8 and Sun 10-6.
What to pack
A rain shell, layers (April lows are in the 40s and highs reach 70), and boots with grip for muddy trails. May is the first month with no freezing nights.

Picking your season
Want a lighter crowd?
April, May, and weekdays in January and February. Fall weekends and the Christmas Market weekends are the busiest and book up first.
Want the river?
June through August. The daily tubing season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Want color and a party?
