Getting Married in Helen, Georgia

Helen works for weddings because the setting does a lot of the decorating. You're about 90 minutes north of Atlanta, the village is built in an Alpine style that photographs like a European postcard, and the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests put rivers, waterfalls and mountain views a short drive away. Unicoi sits on 1,029 acres of state park beside 53-acre Unicoi Lake, which gives you lake views, lodge fireplaces and a big field for outdoor ceremonies in one place. The lodge's venues page lists these spaces. Call the weddings line at 706-878-5920 or email [email protected].

Valhalla is at 688 Bahn Innsbruck in Helen. It takes event bookings and has a request form for special events on its site. The resort doesn't publish space sizes or capacities online, so call 706-878-2200 or email [email protected] to see what fits your guest count.

Both vineyards are south of Helen with Yonah Mountain in the background. Yonah Mountain Vineyards (1717 Highway 255 South) advertises ceremonies and receptions on a 200-acre family property and offers lodging on site. CeNita Vineyards (591 Dock Dorsey Road) has outdoor ceremony space with Yonah views, reception facilities and a barn; wedding tours are by appointment. Neither lists capacities online, so ask when you call.

A waterfall backdrop is possible, but rules apply. Anna Ruby Falls, a short drive from Helen, is run by FIND Outdoors; its twin falls drop about 153 feet and 50 feet, and the walk is a steep, paved 0.4 mile each way. Ask FIND Outdoors at 706-878-1448 whether a ceremony is allowed and what it requires. Helton Creek Falls is on Forest Service land off Helton Creek Road near Vogel State Park, a drive of 45 minutes or so; the Forest Service lists a short but uneven 0.2-mile trail, no restrooms and a posted waterfall danger alert. Contact the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests supervisor's office (770-297-3000) before you plan anything there.

Fall is the favorite, and October dates go first: color peaks around the end of October into early November (see our fall color guide), and Oktoberfest runs through November 1 in 2026. Check the National Weather Service forecast before an outdoor ceremony, and check the events calendar so your date doesn't land on a festival weekend you didn't plan for.
