Anna Ruby Falls at its 9 AM opening, lunch at Muller's Famous Fried Cheese Cafe, the 2.5-mile Lake Trail at Unicoi, then the Festhalle from 6 PM.
Saturday
Brasstown Bald for its 10 AM opening, Hogpen Gap on GA-348, Dukes Creek Falls on the way back, dinner in town, then the Festhalle (Saturday hours are 1 to 11 PM).
Sunday
Breakfast at Hofer's (walk-in, closed Tuesday and Wednesday), drive the rest of the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway, and finish at the Festhalle, where Sunday admission is free.

When does Helen, GA peak for fall color in 2026?
The Georgia Forestry Commission's October 1 report expects northeast Georgia, including White County, to peak around the end of October to the first of November, give or take a week. Only 1 to 2 percent of leaves had changed on October 1. Color starts on the highest ridges, such as Brasstown Bald and the 3,000-foot gaps, and moves downhill about 1,000 feet a week, so Helen's valley floor (about 1,440 feet) turns last.
Is Oktoberfest happening in Helen in October 2026?
Yes. The Helen Chamber of Commerce is running the 56th Annual Helen Oktoberfest at the Festhalle, 1074 Edelweiss Strasse, from September 10 through Sunday, November 1, 2026, and it's open nightly from October 1. Hours are Monday to Thursday 6 to 10 PM, Friday 6 to 11 PM, Saturday 1 to 11 PM and Sunday 1 to 7 PM. October highlights are the 3rd Annual Stein Holding Competition on Saturday, October 10 (6 to 8 PM) and a Halloween costume party on October 31. The opening parade was September 12. The 2027 festival opens September 9, with its parade on September 11 at noon.

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Helen show an average high of 70°F and an average low of 46°F for the month, with about 4.9 inches of rain, the lowest of any month. A typical October has about two nights at or below freezing. The ridges run cooler and windier than town, so bring a layer for Brasstown Bald or Hogpen Gap.

For leaf color, October 23 to 25 and October 30 to November 1 are the likeliest weekends to catch high-elevation and valley color, based on the Forestry Commission's forecast. October 30 to November 1 has the Halloween party and the final Oktoberfest Sunday, so it's also the busiest. October 16 to 18 is lighter and still has the ridges turning. What does Oktoberfest admission cost?
Monday to Thursday it's $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6 to 12. Friday and Saturday it's $15 for adults and $7 for kids 6 to 12. A Friday/Saturday pass is $25 for adults and $12 for kids. Sunday is free, children under 6 are free, and active and retired military get in free with military ID. There's a 100 percent ID check for adults, no pets, and no advance tickets except for groups of 25 or more. Prices are subject to change.
Is river tubing open in October?
Mostly over. The daily season runs from around Memorial Day to Labor Day, and Cool River Tubing's site said it would be open October 8 and 9 with low water, so outfitters may open on warm fall days. Call ahead, and plan on summer 2027 otherwise.
Is Helen crowded in October?
Yes, October is the busiest month, especially Saturdays, when the Festhalle opens at 1 PM and downtown lots fill by midday. Sundays and weekdays are calmer.
