Helen to Unicoi Trail

A 3-mile foot trail that links the village and Unicoi State Park

By The Explore Helen Editorial Team Updated Fees and hours checked with Georgia State Parks

The short answer

The Unicoi/Helen Trail is about 3 miles each way and open to foot traffic only. The trailhead at Unicoi State Park is at the far end of the lodge's level 3 parking lot, and parking there takes a $10 ParkPass (per vehicle, per day). Plan on 1 to 1.5 hours each way, and carry a light if you'll be out near dark.

Helen and Unicoi State Park are only about 10 minutes apart by car, but you can also cover the distance the slow way. The Unicoi/Helen Trail is a roughly 3-mile path for walkers that leaves the lodge area and heads toward town through the forest. It's a good option if you'd like a half-day walk that ends with lunch, or if you want to leave the car behind during a busy weekend.

Because it's 3 miles each way, most people either walk it out and back or arrange a pickup at the other end. For the park's own trail map, stop at the visitor center, which is open Sunday to Thursday 10 to 5 and Friday and Saturday 10 to 6.

Walking it during Oktoberfest

Fall 2026 is the time to think about parking

The 56th Helen Oktoberfest at the Festhalle (1074 Edelweiss Strasse) runs nightly through Sunday, November 1, 2026. On busy nights, downtown lots fill up. Walking in from Unicoi is a fair workaround, but remember it's about 3 miles, so you'll need roughly an hour each way, and the trail isn't lit. If you'll be heading back after dark, a headlamp isn't optional. For a lower-effort plan, see our downtown parking guide.

Practical tips

Plan your return

Decide at the start whether you're walking both ways. If you want to walk just one direction, arrange a pickup or leave a car at each end.

Go in the morning

You'll have cooler air and fewer people, and you'll get back before afternoon storms in warm months.

Bring water

Six miles round trip is a long walk with no services on the trail.

Add a stop at the park

At Unicoi you can walk the 2.5-mile Lake Trail or drive on to Anna Ruby Falls.
