Unicoi State Park & Lodge

Unicoi State Park & Lodge

Over 1,000 acres of mountain paradise with a pristine lake, iconic barrel cabins, and endless adventure

Unicoi State Park is the outdoor heart of the Helen experience. (For a nature-focused perspective covering ecology, wildlife, and seasonal flora, see our Unicoi nature guide.) Spread across more than 1,050 acres of mountain terrain just two miles from downtown Helen, this beloved Georgia state park offers an extraordinary range of activities that span every season and every interest. At its center lies the pristine 53-acre Unicoi Lake, a mountain jewel that reflects the surrounding ridgelines like a mirror on calm mornings. Around it, a network of trails, lodging options, and adventure activities creates one of the most complete outdoor recreation destinations in the southeastern United States.

Whether you are looking for a quick afternoon hike, a multi-day camping trip, an adrenaline-pumping zip line adventure, or a comfortable stay in the park's iconic barrel cabins, Unicoi State Park delivers. It serves as the gateway to Anna Ruby Falls, connects to downtown Helen via a dedicated walking trail, and provides the kind of deep immersion in the Blue Ridge Mountains that makes northeast Georgia so special.

The Lake & Lodge

Mountain comfort at the water's edge

Smith Lake - all 53 acres of it - is the centerpiece of the park, a sheet of clear mountain water framed by forested ridges that reflect on the surface like a painting on calm mornings. A sandy swimming beach operates during summer months, and the lake is open to canoeing, kayaking, and pedal boating (rentals available at the beach area). Fishing is permitted with a valid Georgia fishing license, and the lake holds populations of bass, bream, and catfish. The 2.5-mile Lake Loop trail circles the entire shoreline, offering peaceful forest walking with frequent views of the water and excellent birding opportunities.

The Unicoi State Park Lodge sits on a hillside overlooking the lake, offering 96 comfortable hotel-style rooms with private balconies and mountain views. The lodge restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner featuring southern Appalachian cuisine with locally sourced ingredients when possible. A large conference center makes the lodge a popular choice for weddings, corporate retreats, and family reunions, while the rocking-chair porch is the ideal spot to watch the sunset paint the mountains in shades of amber and rose.

Zip Line & Adventure

19 zip lines and 9 suspension bridges through the canopy

The Unicoi Zip Line & Aerial Adventure is one of the largest canopy tour operations in the state of Georgia. The course features 19 individual zip lines and 9 suspension bridges that carry riders through the high forest canopy with bird's-eye views of Unicoi Lake and the surrounding mountains. Lines range from short introductory runs to long, sweeping flights that cross the full width of the valley. The experience typically lasts 2 to 3 hours and is suitable for ages 10 and up (weight restrictions apply).

Professional guides lead small groups through the course, providing safety instruction and sharing knowledge about the forest ecosystem along the way. The highest platforms reach up to 60 feet above the forest floor, offering a perspective of the mountains that very few visitors ever get to see. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak season and weekends.

Trails & Mountain Biking

Over 12 miles of trail through mountain forest

Unicoi State Park maintains an excellent network of trails for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The Lake Loop is the most popular - a gentle 2.5-mile easy circuit around Unicoi Lake that is suitable for all fitness levels and offers beautiful water views. The Bottoms Loop Trail explores the creek bottom area of the park through mature hardwood forest, while the Smith Creek Trail connects to the road leading up to Anna Ruby Falls, allowing ambitious hikers to combine both destinations in a single outing.

Mountain bikers will find a dedicated 7.5-mile singletrack loop that winds through the park's terrain with moderate elevation changes and technical features - one of the best mountain biking circuits in the north Georgia mountains. Bike rentals are available seasonally. The Helen to Unicoi Trail is a 3-mile paved multi-use path that connects the park directly to downtown Helen, allowing visitors to walk or bike between the two destinations without driving - a scenic route along the Chattahoochee River that is pleasant in every season.

For visitors looking for a different kind of outdoor challenge, the park also features target sports including archery and air gun shooting. Equipment and instruction are available on-site, making these activities accessible even for complete beginners. It is the kind of unexpected offering that adds another dimension to an already impressive lineup of things to do.

Camping & Accommodations

From tent sites to barrel cabins to a full-service lodge

Unicoi offers one of the most diverse accommodation lineups of any state park in Georgia. The campground features 53 tent and RV sites with electric and water hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and access to modern bathhouse facilities. Sites are nestled among the trees and many offer proximity to Smith Creek or the lake. For a step up in comfort, the park's 30 cottages range from one to three bedrooms, each with full kitchens, fireplaces, and screened porches. The Smith Creek Cabins are particularly appealing for anyone who wants a more secluded mountain retreat - tucked away near a cold trout stream, they feel a world apart from the busier areas of the park.

The most unique accommodations are the legendary barrel cabins - cylindrical wooden structures originally built in the 1970s by University of Georgia architecture students as a demonstration of material efficiency. The curved design uses roughly 20% less building material than a conventional rectangular cabin of the same interior volume, making them a remarkable piece of sustainable design decades ahead of their time. Recently renovated with modern amenities, these one-of-a-kind cabins feature full kitchens, king beds, and private balconies elevated on stilts among the trees. Staying in a barrel cabin is a quintessential Helen-area experience, and they book far in advance during peak season.

For those who want a taste of camping without giving up creature comforts, Unicoi also offers "glamping" safari tents - spacious canvas-sided structures outfitted with real beds, air conditioning, and coffee makers. It is the sort of compromise that makes everyone happy: you fall asleep to the sounds of the forest and wake up to birdsong, but you never have to sacrifice a good night's sleep or your morning caffeine ritual.
