What December Feels Like in Helen
The leaf-peepers and Oktoberfest crowds are gone by December, and Helen settles into something closer to a storybook. Mornings are crisp enough to see your breath over the Chattahoochee. By late afternoon the light goes gold on the half-timbered storefronts, and once the sun drops behind the ridge (around 5:25 PM all month) the whole village switches on: strings of lights along the rooflines, glowing shop windows and the tall Christmas tree beside the river.
It's a slower, cozier Helen. On most weekdays you can walk Main Street without weaving through crowds, a table at one of the German restaurants is easier to get than in October, and an evening in a cabin with a fire going is the main event. The busy stretches are easy to predict: the two Christmas Market weekends, parade night and New Year's Eve. Plan around those, and the rest of the month is yours.

Helen's Christmas Market: the Final Weekend
Helen's take on the German Christkindlmarkt is a two-weekend affair run by the Helen Chamber of Commerce, and December 5-6 is your last chance at it in 2026. Vendor booths spread across the downtown Marktplatz and up into Unicoi Hill Park, stocked with handmade ornaments, Christmas decorations, gifts you won't find at the mall and a good spread of sweets and treats.
The market is about shopping and snacking rather than full meals; the Chamber points hungry visitors to Helen's restaurants, which is no hardship in a town full of German kitchens. Unicoi Hill Park has a playground and restrooms, a handy reset point if you're shopping with kids. Saturday afternoon is the liveliest stretch; Sunday morning is the calm one.

The Village Lights
Helen's season officially starts at the Lighting of the Village on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Local musical groups warm up the crowd at Riverside Park, Santa and Mrs. Claus roll in, and the town flips the switch.
You don't need to catch the ceremony to see the show. Any December evening is a good one for a walk. Start at the tree by the river, wander Main Street past the shop windows, then loop back along the water. On cold nights, a mug of something hot from a café and a slow loop of downtown is a perfectly good evening plan.

Helen's Lighted Christmas Parade
This is small-town Christmas at its best, and it happens on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 6 PM. Expect fire trucks, horses, dirt buggies, homemade floats and Santa himself, plus plenty of candy for anyone standing near the curb. It goes on rain or shine.
Locals like the stretch across the street from the downtown gazebo. Get there by about 5:30 with folding chairs, a thermos and gloves; December evenings here slide toward freezing once the sun is down. Planning a full parade day? Dahlonega runs its own Christmas parade at noon the same Saturday, about 45 minutes away, so you can catch both.
Victorian Christmas at Hardman Farm
Five minutes south of Helen, Hardman Farm State Historic Site turns back the clock to Christmas 1877. Interpreters in period dress play the Nichols family, who built the house they called West End, and welcome you in as if you'd arrived for their holiday party. Warm sorghum ginger cookies come out of the historic kitchen and Santa holds court in the carriage house.
Outside, horse-drawn wagons follow the route of the old Unicoi Turnpike, and there are s'mores by the fire before you go. Pre-registration is required, so buy tickets online ahead of time.

Santa, Kids and Family Fun
Helen makes it easy to find Santa without a mall line. The most popular sit-down visit is Breakfast with Santa at Unicoi Lodge, a festive morning with photos with Santa, ornament decorating, gingerbread houses, a letters-to-Santa table, Christmas music bingo and a holiday sweater contest, with hot chocolate on the house.
For something more unusual, Uhuburg, the Renaissance-style castle off Ridge Road, brings in Father Christmas the weekend before Christmas, and children 12 and under get half off their day-visit tickets that weekend. Out in Cleveland, the NOGAWILD wildlife park lets kids meet Santa alongside a penguin and other animal friends on December Saturdays. And the parade on December 12 delivers Santa plus a pocketful of candy for free.

Cut your own Christmas tree
Bringing a tree home is a December tradition for a lot of families who visit the mountains. Two choose-and-cut farms within an easy drive have posted their 2026 days; Southern Tree Plantation opens November 21 and Barn Hill November 27, so December choices are limited. Call before you go, since stock runs down fast on busy weekends.

If you only pick one, make it the Mountain Country Christmas in Lights in Hiawassee: a walk-through show with Christmas music, hot cocoa, train rides and visits with Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Grinch, and it's free for kids 12 and under. Note the schedule. It runs Thursday through Saturday until December 12, then nightly from December 17, and switches to drive-thru only on Christmas Eve and December 26-31. It runs 6-9 PM, and the drive over Unicoi Gap takes about 40 minutes. Magical Nights of Lights at Lanier Islands is the big one, around six miles of displays and more than a million lights; the resort suggests allowing at least two and a half hours.
Christmas Parades and Markets in Nearby Towns
Every mountain town around Helen throws its own Christmas party, and most of them land on the first two weekends of December. Saturday, December 5 is the big one: Helen's market, Cleveland's market and lighted parade, Blairsville's parade and Cornelia's Downtown Christmas all happen the same day. Cleveland's is the easy add-on from Helen, 15 minutes down the road with a holiday market on the courthouse square from noon.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
Spending Christmas itself in Helen is lovely and very quiet. The lights are on, the river is running and the streets belong to a few families out for an evening walk. What you won't find is a full town: many shops and restaurants close on December 25, and several attractions close on Christmas Eve too. Treat it like a cabin holiday with one good meal out, and book that meal well ahead.

New Year's Eve in Helen
Helen rings in the new year with the Dropping of the Edelweiss, its own answer to the Times Square ball. The 13th annual party fills the Festhalle on Thursday, December 31, with a live band, dancing, party favors, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a champagne toast when the edelweiss comes down at midnight. Beer and wine are for sale, kids are welcome and there are no advance tickets; you simply pay at the door.

December Weather in Helen
Real averages, so you pack for the month you'll actually get.
Picture-postcard snow is the exception in Helen, not the rule. NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals for the Helen weather station put average December snowfall at just 0.3 inches, and the chance of waking up to an inch of snow on Christmas morning is well under 1 percent. What December brings in quantity is rain: about 7 inches over the month, which makes it Helen's wettest month of the year.
Days are mild for the mountains, usually in the low 50s, and nights hover right around freezing. That swing matters for packing. A sunny afternoon at the market can feel like light-jacket weather, while the parade at 6 PM calls for a real coat, a hat and gloves. When a cold snap does bring ice, the higher roads go first; mountain routes such as the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway (GA-348) can turn slick long before the valley does.

Practical Tips for a December Trip
Book the big dates first
Market weekend (December 4-6), parade night and New Year's Eve fill first. Weeknights and the weekend of December 18-20 give you the most choice. Lock in a cabin with a fireplace early if that's the dream.

Smithgall Woods closes most of its trails for a managed hunt on December 3-5; only the Laurel Ridge Trail stays open. Anna Ruby Falls locks its gate at 6 PM, so long hikes from Unicoi need to finish early.
