Plan your stops around the clock
Gates and shuttles close earlier than you'd think
Fall days are short and the popular stops have hard cutoffs, so work backward from the closing times. All of these are within 40 minutes of downtown.

The drive to take
Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway
If you have time for one drive, take the 40-mile byway loop. It runs north on GA-17/75 over Unicoi Gap (2,940 feet), west on GA-180 past the Brasstown Bald spur, and south on GA-348 over Hogpen Gap (3,461 feet), where the Appalachian Trail crosses beside a small parking area. Pull off at Hogpen for views across the ridges. Plan half a day with stops, and expect the pull-offs to fill on peak weekends.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals. Bring layers and trail shoes, and check the National Weather Service forecast for the ridges.
Eating and drinking
You don't have to buy a Festhalle ticket to enjoy the season. The Troll Tavern (8590 N Main Street, open daily; 706-878-3117) is one option, and the Welcome Center's dining list includes Bodensee, Hofbrauhaus and Old Bavaria Inn. Saturdays get busy, so expect a wait.
Fall questions
When are the leaves best in Helen in 2026?
The Georgia Forestry Commission expects peak around the end of October to the first of November, give or take a week. The high ridges usually turn first.
How long does Oktoberfest run?
September 10 through November 1, 2026. It's Thursday to Sunday in September and nightly from October 1.
How long should I plan for the scenic byway?
Allow at least half a day with stops. The 40-mile Russell-Brasstown loop runs over Unicoi Gap and Hogpen Gap, and the pull-offs fill on peak weekends.
Can I do Anna Ruby Falls and Brasstown Bald in one day?
Yes. They are about 20 and 40 minutes from downtown. Anna Ruby Falls opens at 9 AM and Brasstown Bald at 10 AM, so start with the falls and head up the mountain before the last shuttle at 4:30 PM.
What should I pack for fall in Helen?
Layers. October highs average 70°F but nights drop to 46°F, and November lows average 36°F. The ridges are colder than town.
