The short answer
Why fall is Helen's best season
Summer in Helen means tubing and crowds. Fall means cool, dry air, hardwood ridges turning red and gold, and a Bavarian beer festival that stays open for weeks. The town sits at about 1,440 feet with ridges well above 3,000 feet a short drive away, so you can chase the color up or down the mountains for several weeks. Late October is also the busiest stretch of the year, so book lodging early.

When the leaves peak
Color starts high and works downhill
The Georgia Forestry Commission posts a Leaf Watch report each week. Its October 1 report expected northeast Georgia to peak around the end of October to the first of November, with only 1-2% of leaves changed so far. The Forest Service says peak color moves down the mountains about 1,000 feet a week.

Short hops from downtown
Because color starts at the top, the drive itself is the plan. Start with the closest stops if the valley is still green, then climb. Brasstown Bald is $10 per adult 16 and up with the shuttle included, Anna Ruby Falls is $6 per person 16 and up (the ParkPass isn't accepted there), and Georgia state parks are $10 per vehicle per day.
