Nacoochee Village
A charming collection of shops, a working grist mill, and Georgia's oldest winery in the heart of the Nacoochee Valley
Nacoochee Village offers a shopping experience that feels completely different from the bustling Bavarian shops of downtown Helen. Located in the quiet Nacoochee Valley at the intersection of GA-75 and GA-17 - right beside the famous Nacoochee Indian Mound - this small collection of shops and businesses occupies a landscape steeped in history. The atmosphere here is unhurried and authentic, with local businesses that have served the community for years alongside newer arrivals that complement the village's character.
Located just half a mile south of Helen's Alpine district, the village is anchored by three notable destinations: the Nora Mill Granary, a fully operational water-powered grist mill running since 1876; Habersham Winery, established in 1983 and one of Georgia's oldest wineries; and the Nacoochee Village Antique Mall, a 7,000-square-foot treasure trove housed in the historic 1876 Martin House. Together with a handful of specialty shops, these businesses create a destination that rewards a leisurely afternoon of browsing, tasting, and discovering.
The Antique Mall
7,000 square feet of treasures in the 1876 Martin House
The Nacoochee Village Antique Mall is housed in the Martin House, a historic structure dating to 1876 that has been thoughtfully repurposed as an expansive antique and collectibles market. The 7,000-square-foot space is organized into booths and display areas operated by dozens of individual dealers, creating a diverse and ever-changing inventory that ranges from fine antique furniture and vintage jewelry to rustic Appalachian folk art, old tools, pottery, glassware, and curiosities of every description.
The building itself adds to the experience. Wide plank floors, exposed beams, and original architectural details create an atmosphere that feels appropriate for the treasures it contains. Experienced antique hunters know that the best finds often hide in places like this - family-run, moderately sized operations where pricing is fair and the inventory turns over regularly. Whether you are searching for a specific collectible or simply enjoying the thrill of the unexpected, the Antique Mall is worth extended browsing time.
Habersham Winery
Georgia's award-winning mountain wines
Habersham Winery has been producing wines in the North Georgia mountains since 1983, making it one of the oldest and most established wineries in the entire state. As a true pioneer of Georgia's modern wine industry, Habersham helped prove that quality wines could be produced in the mountain climate. The Nacoochee Village tasting room offers guided tastings of their full portfolio, which includes muscadine wines, Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin, local varietal wines, fruit wines, and several proprietary blends. The wines reflect the unique terroir of the Georgia mountains - the combination of altitude, clay-rich soils, and moderate climate produces grapes with distinctive character.
The tasting room staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, happy to guide newcomers through the range and explain the differences between the varieties. Bottles, gift sets, and wine accessories are available for purchase. Many visitors find that Habersham's wines make excellent gifts - a taste of the Georgia mountains that can be enjoyed long after the trip is over. The winery also hosts seasonal events and live music on select weekends.
Specialty Shops & Dining
Local artisans and valley flavors
Beyond the anchor tenants, Nacoochee Village includes a rotating assortment of specialty shops featuring handmade crafts, mountain-themed gifts, local art, candles, and gourmet food products. The selection varies over time as new businesses join the village, but the overall character remains consistent - these are independent, locally operated shops that offer products you will not find in chain stores.
Dining options in and around the village offer a welcome break from shopping. The combination of good food, local wine, and a beautiful valley setting makes Nacoochee Village an excellent spot for a relaxed lunch. Many visitors combine their Nacoochee Village stop with a visit to the adjacent Nacoochee Mound and a drive through the scenic Sautee-Nacoochee Valley, creating a half-day excursion that showcases a quieter, more historic side of the Helen area.
