Take I-85 South for about 48 miles, across Lake Hartwell into Georgia, and exit at Lavonia. From there GA-17 runs 45 miles through Toccoa and Clarkesville and up the Nacoochee Valley, and it becomes South Main Street when you reach Helen.

What the drive is like

I-85 is a busy interstate for most of the way, so it's easy driving and not much of a view. The Georgia state line comes over Lake Hartwell, a few miles before the Lavonia exit.

At Lavonia the trip turns into a mountain-foothills drive. GA-17 is two lanes through Toccoa and Clarkesville, with town speed limits and a few lights. After Clarkesville the road follows the Nacoochee Valley, passes Hardman Farm and then Nora Mill Granary on the Chattahoochee before it becomes South Main Street. If you can, make this last stretch in daylight.

Where to break up the drive

Unicoi Lodge and the park's cabins are about 10 minutes from downtown, with trails and Unicoi Lake outside the door. Plan on driving back to town in the evening.

A few minutes south of downtown, with farm-country views and easy stops at Hardman Farm and Habersham Winery. Quieter at night.
