Weekend in Helen from Greenville: 48-Hour Itinerary

Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon — the most efficient Helen weekend for Upstate travelers

Greenville SC to Helen, GA is 105 miles, 2 hours via I-85 South to Lavonia. For a typical Upstate weekend, leave Friday 2 PM, arrive 5 PM, dinner in downtown Helen, full Saturday of waterfall + festhalle + scenic drive, Sunday breakfast and home by 4 PM. Two nights gives you enough time to both see Anna Ruby Falls and eat a proper Bavarian dinner. Budget roughly $450-750 per couple for lodging, food, and activities in peak season; $300-500 in shoulder season.

Friday: Drive & Village Night

2:00 PM — Leave Greenville via I-85 South. You want to clear Anderson before 3:30 PM rush.

3:30 PM — Optional stop at the Tanger Outlets in Commerce, GA (exit 149). Good bathroom + stretch break even if you skip shopping.

4:45 PM — Exit I-85 at Lavonia (exit 173). Pick up GA-17 South through Toccoa.

5:45 PM — Arrive Helen. Check into your hotel or cabin. Downtown Helen lodging (Helendorf River Inn, Country Inn & Suites) puts you a three-minute walk from the Festhalle.

6:30 PM — Walk the village. Strudel window-shop at Hofer's, poke into Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen, check the Chattahoochee River bridge at blue hour.

7:30 PM — Dinner. Call ahead: Bodensee for the Spätzle and Sauerbraten ($20-28 entrees), Paul's Steakhouse if you want steak ($28-45), or Hofbrauhaus for the biggest Bavarian room with live oompah after 7 PM.

9:30 PM — If Oktoberfest is on (Sep-Nov), stop by the Festhalle for the night band. $10 weekday, $15 weekend. If it's not an event night, the Troll Tavern or Beer Garden at Heidelberg is usually open until 10.

Saturday: Waterfall Morning, Village Afternoon, Festhalle Night

8:00 AM — Breakfast at Hofer's Bakery and Cafe. The apple strudel ($5) and a cappuccino will run you about $12 for two. Grab an extra pretzel for later — real Bavarian soft pretzels with salt.

9:30 AM — Drive 15 min to Anna Ruby Falls. The paved 0.4-mile trail is manageable for almost everyone. Both waterfalls — Curtis Creek's 153-foot drop and York Creek's 50-foot drop — are visible from the observation decks. $5 per adult 16+, free under 16.

11:30 AM — Back in Helen. Park downtown and walk.

12:00 PM — Lunch at Hofbrauhaus. Bratwurst plate ($18-22), a half-liter of Hofbräu lager. The live music doesn't start until 3 PM on weekends, but the hall itself is the experience.

2:00 PM — Pick your afternoon. Summer: tube the Chattahoochee ($10-12, 2 hours). Fall: drive the 14-mile Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway (GA-348). Winter: Unicoi State Park lake loop and lodge lounge.

5:30 PM — Back at your hotel/cabin. Shower and change.

7:00 PM — Saturday dinner. If you haven't hit Heidelberg yet, go there for the Jägerschnitzel. Or try King Ludwig's for outdoor seating on the river.

9:00 PM — Festhalle if Oktoberfest is running. Otherwise, dessert at Hofer's (open late on Saturdays) or a cocktail at Paul's Steakhouse bar.

Sunday: Brunch, One More Thing, Home

9:00 AM — Late breakfast at Muller's Cafe (the country-diner option, $8-12 breakfast plates) or Hofer's for a repeat.

10:30 AM — Pick one of: Unicoi State Park lake walk (45 min), Hardman Farm historic house tour (1 hour, $10), Babyland General Hospital (Cabbage Patch Kids, free, families), or downtown Helen shops for souvenirs.

12:00 PM — Light lunch — pick up a pretzel and a sandwich at Hofer's or grab a to-go from the German Cuisine Guide's picks.

1:00 PM — Drive home via GA-75, GA-17, I-85 North. Arrive Greenville between 3:00 and 3:45 PM depending on traffic. If you leave later, you'll hit the Anderson bottleneck — plan accordingly.
