Weekend in Helen from Charlotte: 48-Hour Itinerary
A Friday-through-Sunday plan with real timing, named restaurants, and honest pacing
A two-night trip to Helen from Charlotte works best with a Friday 1:30 PM departure, a 45-minute Commerce Outlets stop, and a 7:00 PM arrival for dinner. Saturday centers on a 9:00 AM Anna Ruby Falls hike and an afternoon tubing float or Festhalle visit. Sunday offers a leisurely breakfast, one bonus stop at Hardman Farm or Habersham Vineyards, and a 12:00 PM departure getting you home by 4:30 PM. Budget $750 to $1,100 per couple not counting gas.
Drive Time and Route
210 miles, 3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 35 minutes. From uptown Charlotte, take I-85 South through South Carolina (Spartanburg, Greenville, Anderson), into Georgia, exit at Lavonia (exit 173 or 177) onto GA-17, and continue to GA-75 North into Helen. Commerce Outlets at I-85 exit 149 is the popular halfway stop. No tolls.
Gas up in Spartanburg or Anderson, SC where prices tend to be 15 to 25 cents cheaper than Georgia. After Lavonia, the next reliable gas is in Toccoa or Clarkesville.
Is the Drive Worth It?
For a 48-hour weekend, Helen versus Asheville is the real decision for Charlotte travelers. Asheville is 90 minutes closer, has stronger restaurants, and wins on pure outdoors. Helen offers the Bavarian village theme, a tubing river downtown, Oktoberfest, and a family-attraction cluster (Mountain Coaster, Babyland General, gold panning) that Asheville cannot match. If this is your first trip to either, pick the one whose vibe matches what you want: Asheville for granola-hipster-brewery, Helen for quirky-theme-family.
The less-great alternative is trying to do Helen as a day trip. Seven hours of driving for five to six hours on the ground is exhausting and you miss evening dining and morning waterfalls.

Things to Do
What to Pack by Season
Spring. Layers, rain jacket, waterproof shoes. Anna Ruby Falls runs heavy after April rains.
Summer. Dry bag, water shoes, sunscreen, bug spray. Mountain evenings cool to the mid-60s so bring one light layer.
Fall. Warm jacket, gloves for late October, closed-toe shoes for Festhalle gravel, phone charger for photo days.
Winter. Winter coat, waterproof boots, hat. Helen runs colder than Charlotte by about 5 to 8 degrees at elevation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a weekend in Helen from Charlotte enough time?
Two nights is right. Three nights lets you add Dahlonega gold country or Brasstown Bald to the trip. A Friday-evening arrival plus Saturday full day plus Sunday morning gives you 36 hours on the ground, which covers Anna Ruby Falls, a village walk, tubing or the Festhalle, and two sit-down dinners without feeling rushed.
What time should we leave Charlotte on Friday?
Leave Charlotte by 1:30 PM to arrive in Helen by 7:00 PM, accounting for a 45-minute Commerce Outlets or Spartanburg stop. Leaving at 3:00 PM or later puts you into Commerce during peak weekend traffic and may push arrival past 8:30 PM, eating into dinner time.
Should we stop at Commerce Outlets on the way?
Yes if you need supplies or want the shopping. Tanger Outlets Commerce has about 70 stores at I-85 exit 149 right on your route. 45 minutes is a reasonable stop. Save bigger shopping for the return trip Sunday afternoon, when you can spend 90 minutes without eating into your weekend in Helen.
How much should a weekend in Helen from Charlotte cost?
Budget $750 to $1,100 for two travelers, not counting gas and outlet shopping. Lodging runs $130 to $240 per night for downtown hotels; cabins in Unicoi State Park run $170 to $260. Two sit-down German dinners runs about $140 to $180. Anna Ruby Falls admission is $5 per adult, tubing $8 to $15 per person.
Is Asheville a better weekend option than Helen?
Depends on what you want. Asheville is 2 hours from Charlotte, has better restaurants, and wins on mountain outdoors. Helen is 3.5 hours, cheaper, less crowded, and has the Bavarian village theme plus Oktoberfest that Asheville lacks. For families with kids, Helen wins. For foodie couples, Asheville.
Can we do the weekend without a car once we arrive?
Only if you stay downtown. Helen's village is walkable end to end in 20 minutes. Anna Ruby Falls, Babyland General, and any lake require a car. Uber and Lyft are limited in White County, particularly Saturday nights during Oktoberfest.
