German Restaurants in Helen, Georgia

A guide to the best German dining in Helen, from intimate Gasthaus cooking to three-story beer halls

Helen reinvented itself in 1969 from a struggling lumber town into a replica of a Bavarian alpine village, and the German restaurants followed. Today the town has seven serious German dining establishments, each filling a different role. This guide covers all of them: Bodensee Restaurant, The Heidelberg, Hofbrauhaus Restaurant, Old Bavaria Inn, Muller's Famous Fried Cheese Cafe, King Ludwig's Biergarten, and Hofer's Bakery.

They are all German-themed, but they are not interchangeable. Bodensee and Muller's are chef-driven with specific regional influences (Romanian-German and Czech, respectively). The Heidelberg and King Ludwig's are where you go for the big beer hall atmosphere. Hofer's Bakery is the breakfast and pastry destination, built on a genuine German baking tradition. A couple of practical notes: Old Bavaria Inn is closed on Tuesdays, and Bodensee is closed on Wednesdays. Plan around those days.

How to Choose

If you want the best food, go to Bodensee. If you want the biggest, most festive atmosphere, go to The Heidelberg. If you want an authentic German breakfast or pastries, go to Hofer's. If you want bratwurst and beer outdoors, go to King Ludwig's. If you want something off the beaten path with Czech influences and great schnitzel, go to Muller's. If you want a traditional sit-down German dinner with good home-style cooking, Old Bavaria Inn and Hofbrauhaus both deliver. The town sits at about 1,447 feet of elevation, which is worth knowing mainly because it feels more like the foothills than the high mountains, and the weather is generally pleasant for outdoor dining from spring through fall.

How Helen Became a German Restaurant Town

Helen is in White County, about 90 miles north of Atlanta, along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The whole thing started in 1969, when local business owners were looking for a way to save the town from economic decline. Artist John Kollock sketched new facades for the downtown buildings with gingerbread trim and festive murals, creating a Bavarian alpine village look that gave the town a new identity. The German restaurants came with the architecture, and over the decades, some of them have developed into genuinely good places to eat.

Bodensee Restaurant

Bodensee is the restaurant that locals and repeat visitors consistently name as the best German food in Helen. It is not a beer hall. It operates with the feel of a family home, which is intentional. The cooking is what people sometimes call "Oma-style," meaning it reminds you of eating at a German grandmother's house: careful, flavorful, and made without shortcuts.

Location and Hours

Bodensee is at 64 Munich Strasse, Helen, GA 30545. Call (706) 878-1026 for reservations or questions. Open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Closed on Wednesdays. Sunday hours may vary, so call ahead.

The Chef and the Setting

The restaurant is named after Bodensee (Lake Constance), the lake at the northern foot of the Alps. The kitchen is led by Master Chef Aurel Prodan, who trained in both Germany and Romania before settling in Helen. The setting is a deliberate contrast to the loud beer halls on Main Street: hardwood interior, a house-like structure, and a relaxed pace that makes it feel more like dining in someone's home than eating at a tourist attraction. There is also a pleasant outdoor veranda for warmer weather.

What to Order

The portions are generous and the menu features regional specialties that are hard to find elsewhere in the area. The homemade garlic wurst, served with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, is a standout and shows off the kitchen's commitment to making things from scratch. The Smoked Pork Chop with onion glaze is a consistent favorite, and the slow-roasted pork preparations rotate but are always worth ordering when available.

If you cannot decide, the House Platter is the way to go: it includes knockwurst, homemade garlic wurst, and smoked pork chop, giving you a solid cross-section of what the kitchen does best. For dessert, the Apple Strudel comes warm with vanilla ice cream, which is a step above the whipped-cream-only versions at other places in town.

The Heidelberg

The Heidelberg (formerly Old Heidelberg) is probably the most photographed building in Helen. It sits at the center of White Horse Square and is the heart of the town's beer hall culture, with three floors offering everything from casual pub food to a full music hall. If Bodensee is the quiet, serious German restaurant, The Heidelberg is the loud, festive one, and both are worth experiencing.

Location and Hours

The Heidelberg is at 8660 N Main Street, Helen, GA 30545. Call (706) 878-0061 for information. The dining room is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and Friday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. They generally operate on a first-come, first-served basis, though they have taken reservations for the dining room in the past. On busy weekends and during Oktoberfest, expect a wait.

History

The building has been part of Helen since 1977, when Harold and Terry Link, a couple from West Palm Beach with German heritage, opened it as The Forge. Harold had an interest in blacksmithing, and the original design reflected that. In 1980, they rebranded it as Old Heidelberg to focus entirely on German cuisine, repainting it in the blue and white color scheme that became iconic. New owners purchased the restaurant in 2013 with a commitment to preserving the character of the place, and in 2018 they shortened the name to simply The Heidelberg.

The Three Floors

The main floor is a traditional dining room where you can sit down for a full meal. The pub area downstairs is more casual, better for a beer and something lighter. And the Bierhimmel Music Hall on the upper level hosts live German bands and is where the real energy concentrates during busy evenings and festival weekends. You can eat on any level, but the music hall is the experience that sets this place apart from the other German restaurants in town.
