Rabun County Lakes
Lake Rabun, Lake Burton, and the hidden waters of Georgia's most scenic mountain county
Rabun County has six lakes strung along the Tallulah River, all created by Georgia Power dams built in the early 1900s. Lake Burton is the largest at 2,775 acres; Lake Rabun, with its historic 1920s hotel and cliff jumping spots, is the most popular for day visitors. These lakes sit about 45-60 minutes east of Helen, and they feel like a different world from the tourist towns - quieter, more private, surrounded by steep wooded shorelines. Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Burton has camping and trout fishing right at the water's edge, and LaPrade's Marina offers boat rentals on both lakes. The Rabun County lakes are best known for boating, swimming, fishing (largemouth bass, trout), and some of the best sunset views in North Georgia.
