Helen is small enough that the choice comes down to one question: do you want to walk to everything, or do you want room to spread out? The in-town hotels below put you a few minutes from Main Street, the Festhalle and the river. Valhalla and Unicoi Lodge trade the walk for golf courses, spa treatments, a lake and trails. Whichever you pick, October is the busy month. Oktoberfest runs nightly through Sunday, November 1, and fall color peaks near the end of October, so book early and check current rates for your dates.

Two properties work better as destinations than as places to sleep. Valhalla Resort Hotel sits in the Innsbruck golf community with an on-site spa and golf club. Unicoi State Park & Lodge is the state park's lodge, with 96 rooms, 29 cabins and a campground, plus eight rooms with roll-in showers.

None of these properties publish one flat rate, and prices swing with the calendar: Oktoberfest nights, fall color weekends and Christmas week cost the most, and January and February cost the least.
