Valhalla Golf Club
The resort describes its course as snaking along the back of the hotel, blending fun play with mountain scenery. It's the easiest to fit into a Helen trip: you can play in the morning and be back in town for lunch. The pro shop has a restaurant, and guests call out the 15th hole for the view. Brasstown Valley Resort
Denis Griffiths designed this Scottish links-style course with rolling hills, bentgrass greens and water hazards on 10 holes. The course uses only 13 of its 210 acres of woodland, and there are five sets of tees, so it works for a range of skill levels. It's at 6321 Highway 76 in Young Harris; call (706) 379-9900 or book online. You can combine it with a day at Vogel State Park (the lake is drained for dam repairs this fall, but trails, cabins and campsites are open).
Old Toccoa Farm
Near Blue Ridge, Old Toccoa Farm Resort has an award-winning course on a 420-acre property. Golf hours are 8 AM to 5 PM and it's closed Tuesdays. It's roughly an hour and a half from Helen, so plan it as a Blue Ridge day trip. Call (706) 946-4653.
