Late Night Dining

Helen is a small mountain town, and most restaurants close their kitchens by nine or ten o'clock. If you are coming back from live music at The Heidelberg or wrapping up a night at King Ludwig's biergarten, finding food after dark takes some planning. The good news is that a few places stay open late, and knowing where they are will save you from going to bed hungry.

Your best bet for late-night food in Helen is Slice of Helen on South Main Street, which keeps its ovens running until 1 AM. New York-style pizza by the slice, calzones, and other quick bites make it the go-to spot for the after-hours crowd. King Ludwig's Biergarten also stays open late, with the kitchen serving pretzels and bratwurst until midnight on most nights. Beyond those options, your best strategy is to eat a late dinner before 9 PM at one of the German restaurants, or stock your cabin with snacks before heading out for the evening.

Here is the honest breakdown of closing times for downtown Helen's main restaurants on a typical weeknight. Times shift by 30 to 60 minutes later on Friday and Saturday nights, and noticeably later during Oktoberfest weekends. Hofbrauhaus: kitchen closes at 10 PM, bar to 11 PM. The Heidelberg: kitchen closes at 9 PM Sun-Thu, 10 PM Fri-Sat. Paul's Steakhouse: 10 PM. Bodensee: 9 PM. Cafe International: 9 PM. Troll Tavern: pub menu to 10 PM, bar later. Bigg Daddy's: kitchen to 10 PM. Mully's Nacoochee Grill: 9 PM.

If you are trying to time a late arrival into Helen, aim to have dinner ordered by 8:30 PM. After 9 PM, kitchens start closing down even at places that technically stay open, and menus shrink. On my last visit during a Thursday in March, I walked into a restaurant at 8:55 PM and was told the kitchen was closed — technically they were open until 9 PM, but the cook had already shut down the line.

Hofbrauhaus at 9235 North Main Street is one of the more reliable late-night options in downtown Helen. The bar menu runs until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday nights, with a shortened list of pretzels, bratwurst, and a few appetizers available. The full dinner menu closes at 10 PM. On regular weeknights the whole place wraps up by 10 PM.

During Oktoberfest weekends, the bar stays open later, often until midnight, and the kitchen holds bratwurst and pretzels for walk-ins until about 11:30 PM. It gets loud and crowded. If you want a quieter late-night bite, this is not the place.

Troll Tavern sits under the Main Street bridge on the Chattahoochee River and runs its pub menu of burgers, fries, and bar snacks until 10 PM on most nights. The bar itself stays open past midnight on weekends, especially when they have live music. On any given Friday or Saturday night, expect a local band playing until 1 AM with a packed crowd standing elbow-to-elbow along the river railing.

Troll Tavern does not do a true full-menu late-night service. If you arrive at 10:30 PM and want real food, the kitchen will tell you apologetically that they closed 30 minutes ago. But the bar is one of the more pleasant late-night spots in Helen, especially on a cool evening with the river running underneath the deck.

Helen Chevron on GA-75, right at the southern edge of the village, has a small hot-food counter that runs until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Roller-grill hot dogs, taquitos, pre-packaged sandwiches, and a basic coffee setup make up the offering. It is not sophisticated food, but it fills a gap. Expect to pay $4 for a hot dog, $6 for a pre-made sandwich.

Drive 15 minutes south on GA-75 and you hit Cleveland, where real 24-hour options appear. Waffle House on East Jarrard Street operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, serving their standard griddle menu through every hour of the night. Taco Bell on West Kytle Street stays open until midnight most nights, sometimes 2 AM on weekends via drive-through. These are your only true middle-of-the-night sit-down and drive-through options within reasonable distance of Helen.

Helen's Festhalle, the main Oktoberfest venue, runs until 11 PM on weekends during festival season (roughly mid-September through early November). Concession food — bratwurst, pretzels, strudel, various sausages, beer — serves all evening, so if you are attending Oktoberfest you can eat well into the late evening without leaving the venue. Many visitors walk straight from the Festhalle to their car and drive 15 minutes south to the 24-hour diner in Cleveland for a second meal and coffee before heading back to their cabin.

I noticed during last year's Oktoberfest that the line at the Cleveland Waffle House around 12:30 AM on a Saturday ran 15 deep with people wearing lederhosen and dirndls. It is an experience worth having at least once.

Most Helen hotels do not offer true room service. Two exceptions: Valhalla Resort on State Route 356 runs a lounge menu until 10 PM, with appetizers and a full bar available to guests. Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris (about 45 minutes north) has room service until 11 PM, making it a genuine late-night option for guests there. Both are pricier than the typical Helen hotel but the convenience matters when you arrive late or do not want to drive out again.

If you know you are arriving in Helen late, stock your cabin or hotel room on the drive up. Ingles Market in Cleveland stays open until 10 PM most days, and Fred's inside Helen closes at 9 PM. Grab breakfast items, snacks, drinks, and any staples you need for the next morning so you are not depending on limited late-night options. A cabin stay with a full kitchen solves most of this problem; a hotel room with a mini-fridge covers the rest.
