Breakfast and Brunch in Helen and the Nacoochee Valley
Where to eat breakfast and brunch in Helen, Georgia, from German bakeries to Southern diners and valley brunch spots
Where to Start Your Morning
Mornings in Helen split cleanly between two traditions: German and Southern. You can start your day with stone-baked bread and European pastries at Hofer's Bakery and Cafe, which has been using recipes brought from Germany in the 1950s, or you can go the biscuits-and-gravy route at Dottie's Kitchen or the pancake-heavy menu at Cimmi's Courtyard Cafe. Both are good ways to fuel up before a hike or a day on the river.
If you want views with your breakfast, JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters at their Cleveland location has a direct sightline to Mount Yonah, and Cafe International sits right on the Chattahoochee. For a proper brunch with cocktails and a more polished setting, Mully's Nacoochee Grill does a Sunday brunch that has become one of the more popular meals in the area.
The Breakfast Scene in Helen
Helen sits at about 1,447 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, right at the doorstep of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The breakfast scene here reflects the town's split personality: half German village, half Southern mountain town. On one side you have bakeries turning out fresh pretzels and apple strudel; on the other, diners serving biscuits the size of your fist with sawmill gravy.
If you are planning to hike Mount Yonah (3,166 feet, a solid climb) or walk the trail to Anna Ruby Falls, eat a real breakfast first. The options below are organized by style so you can find what you are in the mood for.
German Bakeries and European Breakfast
If you are in Helen and do not try at least one German breakfast, you are leaving something on the table. The town has a handful of places that take European baking seriously, and a couple of them are among the best morning meals in the area.
Hofer's Bakery and Cafe
Hofer's at 8758 N Main St is the real thing. Founded by Horst and Gerda Hofer, who came to the U.S. from Schwabach, Germany, in the late 1950s, the Helen location opened in 1991 inside the former First National Bank of White County. The old bank vault is still there, now converted into a gift shop, and the walls are covered with murals by artist Joseph Mahler that trace the history of German baking. Call (706) 878-8200 for current hours.
The bakery uses a stone hearth oven for its breads, which gives them a crust and texture that you will not find at the other breakfast spots in town. The German potato pancakes and the Apfelkuchle (battered apple slices with cinnamon sugar and whipped cream) are the standouts for breakfast, and the pastry case is worth a long look. Prices are moderate, with most breakfast plates running $10-15. Get there early on weekends if you want to sit down without a wait.
Bodensee Restaurant
Bodensee at 64 Munich Strasse is not a bakery, but it is worth knowing about for a heavier German breakfast or early lunch. Owned by Master Chef Aurel Prodan, who trained in both Romania and Germany, the restaurant feels like a traditional Gasthaus (German guest house) rather than a tourist hall. The food leans heavily into meat: sausages, pork, and hearty plates that will hold you through a full day of activity. Call (706) 878-1026 for hours. Prices are moderate, and the portions are generous.
The Nacoochee Valley: Brunch and Views
Head a couple miles south of downtown Helen and the tourist crowds thin out. The Nacoochee Valley is rolling hills, old farms, and a quieter pace. It also has some of the better brunch and coffee options in the area.
Mully's Nacoochee Grill
Mully's at 7277 S Main St in Nacoochee Village is the best Sunday brunch in the Helen area, and it is not particularly close. The restaurant occupies a restored 1900s farmhouse with wooden floors, an open dining room, and a canoe hanging from the ceiling that somehow works with the decor. The setting hits a sweet spot between casual and polished, and the Sunday brunch menu makes the most of it. Call (706) 878-1020 for reservations. Prices range from moderate to upscale, but the quality justifies it.
JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters
JumpinGoat has two locations, and they are different experiences. The Nacoochee Village shop at 7086 S Main St is a small retail spot on the banks of the Chattahoochee where you can grab a coffee and watch trout swim in the clear water from the back deck. The Cleveland roastery at 2404 Helen Hwy is the bigger destination, with a tasting room, a fenced dog park, and one of the best views of Mount Yonah you will find from any coffee shop in Georgia. Call (706) 219-3854 for Cleveland location hours. Prices are reasonable, mostly in the $4-6 range for drinks.
Southern Diners and Comfort Food
If you need a big, filling breakfast before tackling the 4.4-mile hike up Mount Yonah (about 1,500 feet of elevation gain), the Southern diners in Helen will take care of you. These places serve the kind of food that sticks with you.
Cimmi's Courtyard Cafe
Cimmi's at 8797 N Main St in downtown Helen is the pancake spot. The portions are enormous, the decor is country-rustic, and there is a courtyard with a fountain where you can wait or eat outside. Call (706) 878-6037 for hours. Prices are low to moderate, and you will likely not finish what they put in front of you. This is the kind of place where you order pancakes, get a stack that could feed two people, and still consider adding a side of bacon. Good for families, good for hikers who want to load up.
