Helen is an Alpine-style village on the Chattahoochee with waterfalls, a lake and mountain overlooks all within about an hour. It's roughly 87 miles from downtown Atlanta, about 1 hour 50 minutes without traffic, which is far enough to feel like a getaway. Three of the six spots are within 20 minutes of the village, which makes a same-afternoon proposal and dinner easy. Black Rock Mountain is the one that needs a plan of its own.

Toast and celebrate
Habersham Winery (7025 S Main St, 706-878-9463) is open Monday to Thursday 10 to 6, Friday and Saturday 10 to 8, and Sunday 10 to 6, and has poured Georgia wines since 1983. Valhalla Resort Hotel (706-878-2200) has an on-site spa and restaurants for a celebration dinner. Yonah Mountain Vineyards hosts weddings and events, and the visitors bureau also lists the Alpine Wedding Chapel for ceremonies of 12 to 40 guests and On the River Fellowship Church for small weddings and elopements.

Book ahead
Fall weekends and Oktoberfest fill lodging first. Reserve a room or cabin well before you pick a date.
Check fees and closing times
Anna Ruby Falls stops selling tickets at 5 PM and locks the gate at 6. State parks are $10 per vehicle.
Watch the weather
Mountain weather changes quickly and Helen gets about 72 inches of rain a year. Have an indoor backup.
Pack for the hike
Real shoes, a layer (October evenings drop into the 40s), and a small bag you can hide the ring in.
