Blairsville Festivals & Events

Sorghum syrup making, Scottish games, and authentic mountain heritage celebrations

If you enjoy Helen's Bavarian-themed celebrations, you owe yourself a trip up to Blairsville for one of its heritage festivals. This small Union County town, about 50 minutes from Helen, puts on some of the most authentic mountain events in North Georgia. These are not manufactured tourist attractions. They grow out of real traditions that families here have kept alive for generations, from cooking sorghum syrup in open pans to tossing cabers at Scottish Highland Games. The festivals run from spring through fall, and each one gives you a reason to make the drive.

What makes Blairsville festivals different from the bigger events in places like Blue Ridge or Dahlonega is the scale. You can actually park without circling for an hour. You can talk to the people making the crafts. The sorghum guy will hand you a taste straight from the pan and tell you exactly how hot it needs to get before you pull it off. That kind of access is hard to find at larger events, and it is a big part of what makes a trip here worth planning around.

The Sorghum Festival

Blairsville's signature October tradition

The Blairsville Sorghum Festival, held over two weekends in October at Meeks Park, is the town's biggest and most beloved event. It celebrates the old mountain art of making sorghum syrup, a sweetener that Appalachian families relied on long before refined sugar was cheap or easy to find. At the festival, you can watch the full process. Farmers feed sorghum cane through a horse-drawn mill to extract the juice, then cook it down in long, shallow evaporating pans over wood fires. The smell alone is worth the trip: earthy, warm, caramel-sweet.

Beyond the syrup making, the Sorghum Festival features live bluegrass and gospel music, clogging demonstrations, craft vendors selling handmade quilts and woodwork, and a food court stacked with mountain staples like fried pies, barbecue, and cornbread. The festival draws thousands of visitors each year but still feels manageable. Kids love the petting zoo and pony rides, and the whole event has a relaxed, neighborly energy. Jars of fresh sorghum syrup are the souvenir to bring home. Drizzle it on biscuits or pancakes, and you will understand why mountain families have been making this stuff for two hundred years.

Scottish Festival & Highland Games

Pipes, kilts, and caber tossing in the Georgia mountains

Every June, Blairsville hosts the Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games at Meeks Park. It may seem surprising to find bagpipes and kilts in the Georgia mountains, but the Scots-Irish heritage of southern Appalachia runs deep. Many families in Union County trace their roots to Scottish and Ulster Scots immigrants who settled these mountains in the 1700s and 1800s. The festival honors that heritage with traditional Highland athletic competitions, including the caber toss, stone put, sheaf toss, and hammer throw.

The music is a highlight: pipe and drum bands perform throughout the day, and Highland dancers compete in traditional categories. Clan tents line the grounds, where families research their Scottish ancestry and connect with clan societies. Vendors sell Scottish fare, imported goods, and tartans. Admission runs around $10 for adults, and children under 12 usually get in free. If you have any Scottish blood at all, or just enjoy watching large men in kilts throw telephone poles, this is a genuinely fun day out.

Cruisin' the Mountains & Other Events

Car shows, green beans, and year-round fun

Cruisin' the Mountains, held each September, is one of the largest car shows in North Georgia. Classic and antique cars line the streets of downtown Blairsville, and the event draws gearheads from across the Southeast. Live music, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere make it enjoyable even if you cannot tell a carburetor from a crankshaft. The Union County Green Bean Festival in July is a wonderfully quirky local tradition with canning contests, a parade, a pizza-eating competition, and plenty of hometown charm.

The Butternut Creek Festival in the fall brings together live music, arts and crafts, and local food. Smaller events pop up throughout the year at Meeks Park and the town square, from Fourth of July celebrations to Christmas parades. The Union County Farmers Market runs every Saturday from June through October under a massive covered pavilion, with more than 85 vendors selling produce, baked goods, preserves, and crafts. Even if your visit does not line up with a major festival, a Saturday morning at the farmers market is a great reason to make the drive from Helen.

Planning Your Festival Visit

Timing, parking, and what to expect

Most Blairsville festivals are held at Meeks Park, which has ample parking and open space. For the Sorghum Festival and Cruisin' the Mountains weekends, arrive early. Parking fills up by mid-morning, and the best craft vendors and food stalls do their biggest business before lunch. Admission to most events runs $5 to $10 for adults, with children often getting in free.

The drive from Helen takes about 50 minutes, and the route through Neel Gap on US-19/129 is scenic enough to be an attraction on its own. Consider combining a festival trip with a stop at Vogel State Park or a hike up to Brasstown Bald. If the Sorghum Festival falls during peak foliage, the mountain colors along the drive are extraordinary. Book lodging early for festival weekends, as the limited accommodations in Union County fill up fast. Call the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce at (706) 745-5789 for current dates and details.
