North Georgia has more RV camping than you'd guess, and the mountains make the drive part of the trip. The state parks give you trails and lakes, and the private parks give you full hookups and amenities like pools and laundry. Which you pick depends on how close to Helen you want to be.

Vogel State Park right now
Vogel sits at about 2,500 feet near Blairsville with trails like the 4-mile Bear Hair Gap loop. As of October 2026, State Parks says Lake Trahlyta is drained for dam repairs and both the Lake Trahlyta Loop Trail and the waterfall are closed. A new visitor center is going up, so parking is limited. Cabins, campsites and other facilities remain open. Overnight guests pay the $10 ParkPass fee once per vehicle for the stay. For a scenic drive from there, State Parks recommends Wolf Pen Gap Road (GA-180).
Mountain driving tips
Stay on the main roads
GA-75, GA-17 and GA-356 are the easiest routes to the Helen campgrounds. GA-348, the Richard Russell Scenic Highway, has tight switchbacks that big rigs should skip.
Call about length
Few campgrounds publish a maximum rig length. Give them yours and ask about the exact site and its approach road.

Is Lake Trahlyta open at Vogel?
No. As of October 2026 the lake is drained for dam repairs, and the Lake Trahlyta Loop Trail and the waterfall are closed.
What is the closest RV camping to Helen?
Unicoi State Park, about 10 minutes from downtown, and the private parks along GA-356 and the Helen Highway.
Are there pet rules at Unicoi?
Pets are allowed at the campsites if leashed.
